Few designers ever get to create artwork for a super computer, and I was lucky enough to get to do so for Argonne National Laboratory's Advanced Computing Facility. Currently ranked as the 27th fastest supercomputer in the world, Polaris shows off many science visualizations in the artwork on its skin.
The client was interested in the repetition of shapes created by penrose tiling and mentioned it while I was in the concept phase, and it really began as the inspiration for the piece. The supercomputer cabinets are made in a way to allow for cooling cabinet in the doors, which meant working with many ins & outs as opposed to a flat surface. Using the undulation of the cabinet to our advantage, the artwork was created to embrace that movement and symbolize the scientific advancements explored with this machine. Creating the science themed artwork was a blast. It has been a true high point of my career and I am so proud of this piece.
